Data Collection, Cleaning and Visualization

Learners follow the Cedar Valley Middle School Green Commute club from a question to a chart: turning a vague question into a data plan, choosing between surveys, observation and sensor logs, and then cleaning real-looking messy data (duplicates, inconsistent labels, missing values, impossible values and unit mismatches). They keep a cleaning log and see how much dirty data can change an average or a chart.

What learners will discover

  • Turn a question into a data plan and classify variables as categorical or numerical.
  • Choose a collection method (survey, observation or sensor log) for a question and name its weaknesses.
  • Find and fix duplicates, inconsistent labels, missing values, impossible values and unit mismatches, treating missing as missing rather than zero.
  • Document every cleaning step in a cleaning log so others can check and repeat it.
  • Summarize and chart data only after cleaning, and explain how dirty data would have changed the result.
