Chance Models and Compound Probability

Learners place probabilities on a 0-to-1 scale, compute them for equally likely outcomes, and compare theoretical probabilities with the long-run relative frequencies of experiments, including results that show a model is wrong. They build uniform and non-uniform probability models, then find probabilities of compound events with organized lists, tables and tree diagrams, and design simulations for events that are hard to compute.

What learners will discover

  • Express the probability of a chance event as a number from 0 to 1, interpret its size, and compute it for equally likely outcomes, including the complement of an event.
  • Estimate probabilities from the relative frequencies of experiments, make predictions, and explain differences between experimental and theoretical probabilities.
  • Develop uniform and non-uniform probability models, from the structure of a situation or from data, and use them to find probabilities and make predictions.
  • Find probabilities of compound events using organized lists, tables and tree diagrams, and design and interpret a simulation of a compound event.
