Multi-Step Modeling, Critique and Transfer

The grade 7 capstone. Learners model multi-step percent and rate situations with multipliers, write and solve equations and inequalities for real constraints, and act as checkers who find, name and fix the first error in flawed solutions. They finish by comparing two correct methods and by transferring the year's tools (scale, area, volume, probability and data) to unfamiliar situations, with cumulative retrieval throughout.

  • 4 lessons
  • About 100 minutes
  • Modeling, critique and transfer check: 11 questions
  • Ways to answer: choose an answer, type a fraction, highlight a text, match pairs, type a number and sort into groups

What learners will discover

  • Model multi-step percent and rate problems (discounts, tax, tips, markups, commission, interest and percent change) with multipliers, and check results for reasonableness.
  • Model situations with equations of the form px + q = r and p(x + q) = r and with inequalities, solve them, and interpret the solutions in context.
  • Critique flawed solutions to percent, algebra, geometry and statistics problems: find the first error, explain it and correct the answer.
  • Compare two solution methods and transfer the year's tools (rates, scale, area, volume, probability and data) to unfamiliar situations.
