Mathematics · Grade 9
Expressions, Units and Structure
Learners write expressions from words and contexts and read the meaning of each part, use the properties of operations to produce and justify equivalent expressions (and to disprove false equivalences with counterexamples), evaluate formulas carefully, and use units and dimensional analysis to convert quantities and check that formulas make sense.
- 4 lessons
- About 110 minutes
- Expressions and units check: 11 questions
- Ways to answer: fill in the blanks, choose an answer, match pairs, type a number, put in order and sort into groups
What learners will discover
- Write algebraic expressions from verbal descriptions and contexts, and interpret terms, factors and coefficients in context.
- Use the distributive, commutative and associative properties to write equivalent expressions, justify each step, and disprove a false equivalence with a counterexample.
- Evaluate expressions and formulas accurately, including substitution of negative values and exponents.
- Convert units with dimensional analysis (including square units) and use units to check that a formula or answer makes sense.
