How to Draw a House

  • Starter (level 1 of 5)
  • 8 min
  • 6 steps
  • Ages 3–7 (a guide, not a rule)

Draw on paper: Paper, Pencil. Optional: Eraser, Crayons or markers in any colors.

Draw it on the screen

A house starts as a big square with a pointy roof on top. Then you add the parts that make it a home: a door to walk in, windows to look out of and a chimney on the roof. Who lives in your house? Draw them in the windows!

Rather color it? Print the house coloring page.

Your drawing does not have to look like this one. Every artist draws a little differently.

Tips for this drawing

Helpful hints

  • Start the roof a little past one corner of the square, go up to a point, then come down a little past the other corner.
  • Leave a space between each window and the door.

Common mistakes

  • The roof is smaller than the house, like a little hat. Make the roof a little wider than the square on both sides.
  • The door floats in the middle of the wall. The bottom of the door sits right on the bottom line of the house.

Make it simpler

Draw the square, the roof and the door. Skip the windows and the chimney.
