Mission 13

The Lost Map

Old maps keep turning up in Fern Hollow: one drawn in pictures, one of a trail nobody walks, one so faded that only its numbers are left, one torn into strips. Each still leads somewhere worth finding: a swing, a forgotten orchard, a time capsule, a hidden bird hide, a lookout over the lake. Read the map, work out the way, and go and see.

Who is playing?

Each age gets its own version of the story. Any of them is fine to play.

A Bench with a View

The job: Fix the founders' viewpoints from an old survey sketch, weigh them against the brief, and justify where the new lookout bench should stand.

For grown-ups: what this mission practices

Reading and making maps: matching pictures to landmarks, position words, left and right, counting steps, rows and places, grid coordinates, compass directions and a scale. Older children piece a torn map together by its edges, fix a place from two distances or two bearings, compare routes and sites, and justify a choice from evidence.

Ages
Five versions, from Preschool to Grade 8. They are different designs, not the same task with other numbers.
How it is checked
Every answer is checked by rules the child can see at work on the screen. Any answer that meets them is right.
Help
Olly can read any line aloud, give a hint that points at where to look, or show one way. A report says where help was used.
Time
Nothing is timed. A part takes a few minutes and progress is saved after each one for a signed-in child.
