Mission 14
The Paper Workshop
Mr. Castillo's little workshop makes things out of paper, and every one has a job to do: a boat for the pond race, cards for the street party, kites for kite day, boxes for the bakery, a glider that has to prove itself. Follow the steps, measure before anything is cut, and find the design that works best.
- 4 parts
- 8 to 12 minutes
- Grades 2 and 3
Who is playing?
Each age gets its own version of the story. Any of them is fine to play.
Grades 2 and 3
Kites for Kite Day
The job: Measure the sticks and choose the paper for three kites, so that nothing is cut wrong and little is wasted.
- The Model Kite With a PlayOwl plan
- Sticks from the Rods With a PlayOwl plan
- Paper for the Sails With a PlayOwl plan
- The Giant Kite With a PlayOwl plan
For grown-ups: what this mission practices
Following and mending a process, choosing and measuring material (squares, centimeters and millimeters, halves), working out how many pieces a sheet gives and what is wasted, and comparing designs by a stated test. Older children read a test table, change one thing at a time and justify a change from their measurements.
- Ages
- Five versions, from Preschool to Grade 8. They are different designs, not the same task with other numbers.
- How it is checked
- Every answer is checked by rules the child can see at work on the screen. Any answer that meets them is right.
- Help
- Olly can read any line aloud, give a hint that points at where to look, or show one way. A report says where help was used.
- Time
- Nothing is timed. A part takes a few minutes and progress is saved after each one for a signed-in child.
