The Recycling Workshop, an Adventure Mission story cover

Mission 22

The Recycling Workshop

The neighborhood brings its used things to the workshop on Larch Lane. Some can be used again just as they are. The rest must be sorted by what they are made of before Mr. Hugo can turn cans into planters and plastic into a bench. Sort, test, weigh, and then make the whole line work better.

Who is playing?

Each age gets its own version of the story. Any of them is fine to play.

Grades 6 to 8

Two Layouts and Sixty Coins

The job: Compare two ways to lay out the sorting line on their numbers, then spend a small budget where it does the most good and justify it.

  1. The Slowest Station With a PlayOwl plan
  2. Right Bin, by Mass With a PlayOwl plan
  3. Layout A or Layout B With a PlayOwl plan
  4. Sixty Coins With a PlayOwl plan
  5. Clear-Out Month With a PlayOwl plan
For grown-ups: what this mission practices

Classifying by material and by a tested property (a magnet picks up steel, some plastics float), counting on, reading a tally, weighing in kilograms, and reasoning from a simple, stated model of a sorting line: a station given more than it can handle grows a pile. Older children use shares and percents by mass, compare two layouts and justify how to spend a small budget.

Ages
Five versions, from Preschool to Grade 8. They are different designs, not the same task with other numbers.
How it is checked
Every answer is checked by rules the child can see at work on the screen. Any answer that meets them is right.
Help
Olly can read any line aloud, give a hint that points at where to look, or show one way. A report says where help was used.
Time
Nothing is timed. A part takes a few minutes and progress is saved after each one for a signed-in child.
