Mission 12

The Weather Watchers

The Weather Watchers keep the weather station, and everybody asks them the same thing: what will today be like? Look at the sky, read the instruments, keep the log and choose what to wear, pack or change, for a class walk, a market day, a sailing afternoon and a night in a tent.

Who is playing?

Each age gets its own version of the story. Any of them is fine to play.

What Will Yuki Wear?

The job: Look at the sky and help Yuki get ready to play outside.

  2. A Snowy Day With a PlayOwl plan
  3. A Sunny Day With a PlayOwl plan
For grown-ups: what this mission practices

Matching clothing and equipment to weather, reading a thermometer, a rain gauge and a wind meter in standard units, keeping and reading a table of observations, spotting a pattern or a reading that does not fit, and planning against several conditions at once. Older children compare forecasts, treat a forecast as a likelihood and justify a change of plan from the readings.

Ages
Five versions, from Preschool to Grade 8. They are different designs, not the same task with other numbers.
How it is checked
Every answer is checked by rules the child can see at work on the screen. Any answer that meets them is right.
Help
Olly can read any line aloud, give a hint that points at where to look, or show one way. A report says where help was used.
Time
Nothing is timed. A part takes a few minutes and progress is saved after each one for a signed-in child.
