What this book practices
The English folk tale as a short chapter book in new words. A gentle telling: the giant is noisy and cross but harms no one, Jack takes home only what was carried off from his family's farm long ago, and everyone is safe at the end.

Credit and rights
Retold by PlayOwl from the English folk tale. Source: Jack and the Beanstalk by English folk tale (collected by Joseph Jacobs) (1890).
The words are new PlayOwl writing that follows a story in the public domain. PlayOwl claims no rights in the underlying story.
- Adaptation
- Retold for PlayOwl in 2026 from the English folk tale of Jack and the beanstalk. PlayOwl's telling is gentler than the old versions: the giant is loud and grumpy but eats no one, the hen and the harp were carried off from Jack's family farm long before, Jack leaves the giant's gold behind, and the giant climbs back to the clouds unhurt. The tale is folklore with no author. The Jacobs collection was published in 1890 and Joseph Jacobs died in 1916, so that printed version is in the public domain. Only the outline of the tale was followed, and no edition's wording was copied. The words "Fee, fi, fo, fum" are a traditional phrase that is centuries old.

- Text
- Written for PlayOwl in 2026 as a new retelling. Every sentence is new wording. The giant's rhyme keeps only the four old nonsense words "Fee, fi, fo, fum"; the rest of the rhyme was written new for this book. Original wording owned by PlayOwl.
