Reveal the answer

A butterfly.

A butterfly starts life as a tiny egg that hatches into a caterpillar. The caterpillar eats and grows, then rests inside a hard case called a chrysalis. When it comes out, it is a butterfly with four wings. Moths begin as caterpillars too, but butterflies are the ones famous for bright, colorful wings.

Hint 2 (more help)

Many of us can pull our heads into our shells to stay safe.

Reveal the answer

A turtle.

A turtle's shell is part of its body: it grows from the turtle's ribs and backbone, so a turtle can never crawl out of it. Turtles swim in ponds, rivers and the sea. A tortoise is a kind of turtle that lives on land and is not a swimmer.

Hint 2 (more help)

My hands move around in a circle, pointing at numbers.
