Sustain and Repair an Interpersonal Exchange

Real conversations break down: a word is missing, someone misunderstands a date, two people talk at once, the tone is wrong for the setting. Learners practise the strategies advanced speakers use to keep going without switching languages: describing a word they do not know, correcting themselves, paraphrasing to check meaning, resolving misunderstandings politely, managing turns and hesitation, and shifting register between a formal volunteer interview and an informal planning chat.

What learners will discover

  • Communicate around a missing word by circumlocution (الشَّيْءُ الَّذِي نَسْتَعْمِلُهُ لِـ …، نَوْعٌ مِنْ …، عَكْسُ …) and by paraphrase.
  • Repair breakdowns: correct yourself (أَقْصِدُ …)، confirm by paraphrasing the other speaker (بِعِبَارَةٍ أُخْرَى …)، and resolve misunderstandings politely (يَبْدُو أَنَّ هُنَاكَ سُوءَ فَهْمٍ).
  • Manage turns and hesitation: hold the floor, interrupt politely, invite others in, and use MSA hesitation phrases (فِي الْحَقِيقَةِ، كَيْفَ أَقُولُ …).
  • Adjust register to the setting (a formal interview versus an informal peer discussion) and sustain an extended exchange.
