A Defensive Security Review

The elective's capstone. Learners carry out a complete, strictly defensive security review of a fictional bike co-op: they agree written permission and scope, gather evidence from documents, settings and interviews with a checklist, rate and prioritize findings, write specific recommendations with owners and dates, and present a clear report with a plain-language executive summary and a follow-up plan.

What learners will discover

  • Scope and authorize a defensive review: written permission, in-scope and out-of-scope systems, non-intrusive methods only, and confidentiality.
  • Use a checklist across accounts, devices and network, data and backups, monitoring and response, and people and process to turn evidence into findings and positive observations.
  • Rate findings by likelihood and impact, prioritize them with effort in mind, and write specific recommendations with an owner, a date and a way to check completion.
  • Write and communicate a review report: plain-language executive summary, evidence-based findings, action plan, careful sharing and a follow-up check.
