Collision and Simplified Physics

Learners detect collisions between axis-aligned boxes and circles, simulate motion with velocity, gravity and Euler steps, respond to collisions by resolving overlaps and bouncing with restitution, and examine the limits of simple physics, especially tunnelling at high speed and how substeps or swept tests prevent it.

  • About 95 minutes
  • Check what you learned: 8 questions
  • Ways to answer: choose an answer, put code in order, trace code, type a number and true or false

What learners will discover

  • Detect collisions between axis-aligned rectangles and between circles, deciding whether touching counts.
  • Simulate motion with velocity, acceleration and Euler steps, and explain the effect of the timestep.
  • Respond to collisions by resolving overlaps and stopping, sliding or bouncing with restitution.
  • Recognise tunnelling and other limits of simple physics and choose mitigations.
