Interpret Extended Informational Texts

Learners read extended French informational texts the way a careful analyst does. Through an original feature article on the restoration of mangroves in Senegal, an illustrative data table and a short opinion column, they identify central idea, purpose, audience and structure, test the article's claims against the data (including a claim that overstates them), decode advanced vocabulary and journalistic expressions through context and word formation, and practise the main question types of formal reading tasks before writing a concise analytical response.

What learners will discover

  • Determine the central idea, purpose and intended audience of an extended informational text and explain how its structure (constat, causes, réponses, limites, bilan) serves that purpose.
  • Read a table or chart alongside a text and judge whether each claim is confirmed, qualified, contradicted or not addressed by the data, including claims that confuse an input (trees planted) with an outcome (trees still alive).
  • Infer the meaning of advanced vocabulary and journalistic expressions (en matière de, mettre en place, faire face à, prendre de l'ampleur, à l'inverse, à l'heure où) from context, word formation and register.
  • Answer main-idea, detail, inference, purpose and vocabulary-in-context questions with evidence, and write a concise analytical response (affirmation, preuve, explication).
