Analyze Literary and Cultural Perspectives

Learners read public-domain French literature closely: Jean de La Fontaine's fable « Le Corbeau et le Renard » (1668), Alphonse Daudet's story « La Dernière Classe » (1873, summarized in original French), Victor Hugo's poem « Demain, dès l'aube… » (1856) and three stanzas of Alphonse de Lamartine's « Le Lac » (1820). They analyze voice, figures of speech, tone and versification, read each text in its context while keeping present-day judgment separate, take a critical look at the national perspective of Daudet's story, compare two poems of loss point by point, and write a literary commentary built on affirmation, citation and commentaire.

What learners will discover

  • Analyze literary elements in short texts: narrator and poetic voice, figures of speech (comparaison, métaphore, personnification, hyperbole, antithèse, anaphore, apostrophe, ironie), tonalité and basic versification (alexandrin, strophe, rime).
  • Interpret a text in its historical and cultural context, distinguishing textual evidence, context and present-day judgment, and evaluate the perspective a text promotes and what it leaves out.
  • Compare how two texts treat a shared theme, organizing the comparison by points (voice, addressee, time, nature, form, tone) with comparative connectors.
  • Write a literary commentary paragraph or short essay that makes a claim and supports it with integrated quotations analyzed through procédé, effet and interprétation.
