Synthesize Sources in the Target Language

Learners write a persuasive essay that synthesizes four French sources on the question « Faut-il servir davantage de repas végétariens dans les cantines scolaires ? »: a press article, an illustrative chart, a spoken interview with a livestock farmer and a student's testimony. They identify each source's position, key information and perspective, integrate the sources by idea (agreement, complement, tension), paraphrase without patchwriting and attribute with precise reporting verbs, and write a well-argued synthesis that uses every source. The quiz transfers the method to advertising aimed at children, with Québec's long-standing ban as context.

What learners will discover

  • Identify the position, key information, perspective and limits of each source in a set that combines print, data and audio.
  • Integrate sources by idea, showing where they agree, complement each other or are in tension, with clear attribution (source 1, selon l'éleveur…) and synthesis connectors (tant… que…, de même, en revanche, rejoindre, aller dans le même sens).
  • Paraphrase without copying or patchwriting, quote only short phrases, and report sources with precise verbs (affirmer, souligner, rappeler, reconnaître, nuancer, relativiser, mettre en garde contre, déplorer, préconiser) and accurate data language.
  • Write a persuasive synthesis essay that answers the question with a clear, qualified position and uses every source, including one that challenges the position.
