Listening and Reading for Meaning
Learners who have finished the Foundation route become more independent listeners and readers of French. They predict before they listen or read and catch the gist on a first pass; pick out numbers from 60 to 100 and beyond (including septante and nonante), prices, 24-hour times, years and phone numbers read in pairs; infer feelings, reasons and purposes from clues; and use word families and affixes to work out new words before summarizing what they understood.

- About 100 minutes
- Listening and reading check: 9 questions
- Ways to answer: fill in the blanks, choose an answer, highlight a text, match pairs, type a number and sort into groups
What learners will discover
- Use prediction (title, pictures, situation, expected words) and a first gist pass to say what a short spoken or written French text is about.
- Catch details in announcements and texts: numbers from 60 to 100 and beyond (soixante-dix, quatre-vingts, quatre-vingt-dix; septante and nonante in Belgium and Switzerland), prices, 24-hour times, years and phone numbers read in pairs.
- Infer feelings and reasons from clues you can point to, and identify a text's purpose (informer, inviter, convaincre, divertir).
- Work out new words through word families and affixes (boulanger → boulangerie; heureux → malheureux; re-, in-/im-, dé-; -eur/-euse, -ette) and summarize a short text in one or two sentences.
