A Multi-Model Investigation
The Algebra II capstone. Working with invented monitoring data from a fictional lake, learners decide which function family fits each data set (linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic or periodic), build models from key features and from transformed data, compare competing models with residuals and context, and write an investigation report that states its assumptions and limits.

- About 145 minutes
- Multi-model investigation check: 10 questions
- Ways to answer: choose an answer, highlight a text, type a number, put in order, sort into groups and write a short answer
What learners will discover
- Identify an appropriate function family for a data set from differences, ratios, shape and context.
- Build linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic and sinusoidal models from data or key features, including by transforming data with logarithms.
- Compare competing models using residuals and context, and recognize the limits of extrapolation.
- Communicate a modeling investigation: question, model choice, results, assumptions and limitations.
