Mathematics · Grade 3
Properties and Fact Strategies
Learners use the properties of multiplication as tools: turn-around facts and the rules for 0 and 1, grouping three factors in a helpful order, and breaking a hard fact into two easier facts with an array (8 × 7 = 8 × 5 + 8 × 2). They then build efficient strategies such as doubling and 'ten groups minus one group' for nines.

What learners will discover
- Use the commutative property (turn-around facts) and the rules for multiplying by 0 and by 1.
- Use the associative property to group three factors in a helpful order, such as 3 × 5 × 2 = 3 × 10.
- Use the distributive property to break a fact into two easier facts, such as 8 × 7 = 8 × 5 + 8 × 2, and show it with an array.
- Use fact strategies such as doubling (4s and 8s) and 'ten groups minus one group' (9s) to find products.
