Mathematics · Grade 3
Fractions as Equal Parts and Numbers
Learners discover that a fraction names equal parts of one whole, build non-unit fractions from unit fractions, and then see that every fraction is also a number with its own place on the number line. A garden-trail scene checks that the idea transfers to a new kind of whole.

What learners will discover
- Explain that a fraction names one or more EQUAL parts of the same whole, and spot when parts are not equal.
- Name unit fractions such as 1/4 and build non-unit fractions such as 3/4 as copies of a unit fraction.
- Place fractions between 0 and 1 on a number line by cutting the space from 0 to 1 into equal lengths.
- Use fractions to describe a new kind of whole, such as a length of trail, and explain the reasoning.
