Explain and Defend an Idea
Learners build a reasoned argument in Spanish about a school or community issue. Using an original opinion essay on homework at weekends as a model, they state a clear thesis, support it with reasons and examples, choose between the indicative and the subjunctive in opinions (creo que es… / no creo que sea…; es necesario que…), anticipate and answer a counterargument, and finally write and defend their own short argumentative essay.

- State a clear thesis and support it with distinct reasons, examples and a conclusion, using organizing connectors (en primer lugar, además, por ejemplo, por lo tanto).
- Express opinion, certainty and doubt with the correct mood: indicative after creo que, es cierto que, está claro que; subjunctive after no creo que, dudo que, es necesario/importante que.
- Anticipate a counterargument and respond with a concession and a rebuttal (Es cierto que…, pero…; Aunque algunos piensan que…, …).
- Write and defend a short argumentative essay on a school or community issue, responding to an objection.
