Listening and Reading for Meaning

Learners who have finished the Foundation route become more independent listeners and readers. They predict before they listen or read, catch the gist on a first pass, pick out numbers, times and places in announcements, infer feelings and purposes from clues, and work out new words through word families before summarizing what they understood.

  • 4 lessons
  • About 100 minutes
  • Listening and reading check: 9 questions

What learners will discover

  • Use prediction (title, images, situation) and a first 'gist' pass to identify what a short spoken or written text is about.
  • Identify specific details such as numbers, times, dates and places in spoken announcements and written texts.
  • Infer feelings, reasons and relationships from clues, and identify a text's purpose (to inform, invite, persuade or entertain).
  • Work out new words through word families and affixes (pan → panadería, panadero; útil → inútil) and summarize a short text in one or two sentences.
