Observation, Line and Shape

Drawing well starts with seeing well. Learners practice slow, careful observation (drawing what they see instead of the symbol they remember), use the main kinds of line and line weight on purpose, simplify subjects into geometric and organic shapes, notice positive and negative space, and measure proportions by sighting with a pencil held at arm's length. Every lesson ends with a short paper-and-pencil drawing to try at home or in class.

Color, Value and Composition

Learners study the three tools artists use to steer a viewer's eye. They build value scales and model light on a form (highlight, midtone, reflected light, core shadow and cast shadow), describe colors precisely by hue, value and saturation, use color-wheel relationships, tints, shades and tones, and plan compositions with a focal point, the rule of thirds, balance and leading lines. They finish by analyzing how a painting directs attention.

Pattern, Perspective and Spatial Design

Learners build repeat patterns from a motif using slides, flips and turns, and identify regular, alternating, progressive and flowing rhythm. They create the illusion of depth with overlap, size, placement, detail and atmospheric perspective, then construct one-point and two-point linear perspective with a horizon line and vanishing points. Finally they plan a space, from a scaled floor plan to a perspective view with foreground, middle ground and background.

Digital Painting and Image Layers

Learners discover how digital images work and how digital painters organize them. They compare raster and vector images, calculate pixel dimensions and print sizes, use layers with stacking order, opacity, masks and blending modes, follow a painting workflow from sketch to flats, shading and details, choose colors by hue, saturation and brightness, and save layered working files and the right export formats. No particular app is required; paper layers work too.

Visual Storytelling and Illustration

Learners tell stories with pictures. They choose which moment of a text to illustrate and whether the picture should match, extend or contrast with the words; control what viewers feel with shot types and camera angles; plan comic and storyboard sequences with panels, gutters, closure and pacing; and design characters whose silhouettes, shapes, expressions and poses read clearly and stay consistent from drawing to drawing.

Design for an Audience and Accessibility

Learners design for real people. They read a design brief for audience, purpose, context and constraints; build visual hierarchy so the most important message is seen first; choose legible typography; make designs accessible with sufficient color contrast (calculating contrast ratios), more than color alone, alt text and plain language; and organize layouts with alignment, proximity, repetition, contrast, grids and white space.

Critique, Revise and Document Process

Artists and designers improve through critique and revision. Learners practice a four-stage critique (describe, analyze, interpret, evaluate) and separate observation from judgment; give kind, specific, helpful feedback and receive it gracefully; revise with clear priorities, comparing versions against criteria; and document their process with thumbnails, versions and a process log, while using references ethically and giving credit.

Create a Curated Visual Portfolio

In this capstone, learners build a portfolio that represents them. They define its purpose and audience, select and sequence work by clear criteria, write labels, an artist statement and alt text, photograph and present flat artwork accurately with correct proportions while protecting their privacy, and reflect on their growth with before-and-after evidence, ready to answer a reviewer's questions about their choices.
