How to Draw a Fox
- Confident (level 4 of 5)
- 20 min
- 11 steps
- Ages 8–12 (a guide, not a rule)
Draw on paper: Paper, Pencil. Optional: Eraser, Orange, brown and black crayons, colored pencils or markers.
Draw it on the screen
This fox sits and looks right at you, so its face is symmetrical: the left side mirrors the right. A light center line and eye line help you place each pair of parts at the same distance. Then the bushy tail wraps across the front, and you learn to stop the legs where the tail covers them.
Rather color it? Print the fox coloring page.
Step by step
- New lines: purple, thick and glowing
- Lines you already drew: gray
- Guides: dashed blue, draw them lightly
- Erase: dotted pink with an eraser
Step 1 of 11
-
Step 1 of 11 Draw a light circle for the head. Draw a light line straight down through the middle and a light line across, a little above the middle. -
Step 2 of 11 Draw a big light oval for the body under the head. Let it overlap the bottom of the head circle a little. -
Step 3 of 11 Draw two tall pointed ears on top of the head, the same size and the same distance from the center line. Join them with a short curve. -
Step 4 of 11 Draw the fluffy cheeks: out from each ear, two or three fur points at the sides, then down to a pointed chin on the center line. -
Step 5 of 11 Draw two slanted eyes on the eye line, the same distance from the center. Add the nose on the center line, two lines for the snout and a small mouth. -
Step 6 of 11 Draw the inside of each ear. Then draw a curve on each cheek from the snout to the last fur point: it shows where the white fur begins. -
Step 7 of 11 Draw the sides of the body down from under the cheeks. Then draw a big round bump on each side: the folded back legs. -
Step 8 of 11 Draw the bushy tail next, because it is in front. It comes out on the right, curls across the bottom and ends in a point that turns up on the left. -
Step 9 of 11 Draw the front legs. First draw a zigzag of white chest fur under the chin. Then draw the legs straight down to the tail, with one line between them. -
Step 10 of 11 Erase the guides: the head circle, the body oval, the center line and the eye line. -
Step 11 of 11 Finish with details: a line for the white tail tip and a line across the legs where the dark socks start. The tail is round, so shade its bottom edge with short lines.
You did it!
Your drawing does not have to look like this one. Every artist draws a little differently.
Tips for this drawing
Helpful hints
- Turn your paper upside down to check the face: if one side looks bigger, the center line shows you which.
- Make the ears tall and pointed. Round ears turn a fox into a bear or a cat.
- Draw the tail before the legs. It is in front, so the legs are easy to stop at its edge.
Common mistakes
- One eye is higher than the other. Put both eyes right on the eye line, the same distance from the center line.
- The legs are drawn all the way down through the tail. Stop each leg line where it touches the top of the tail. The tail hides the paws.
- The tail is thin like a cat's. A fox's tail is bushy: make it almost as thick as a leg is long, and give it a white tip.
Make it simpler
Draw just the fox's head: the circle, the center and eye lines, two tall ears, the fluffy cheeks, eyes and a nose. Then add a simple oval body and a tail.
Symmetry
The face is the same on both sides of the center line. Draw one ear, eye or cheek, then draw its partner the same distance from the line on the other side.
Overlap
The tail is in front of the legs, so draw the tail first. The legs and the round back legs stop where they reach the tail.
Proportion
A fox has a big head for its body and very tall ears: each ear is about as tall as the eye is from the chin.
