How to Draw a Puppy Face
- Easy (level 2 of 5)
- 10 min
- 10 steps
- Ages 5–9 (a guide, not a rule)
Draw on paper: Paper, Pencil. Optional: Eraser, Brown, tan and pink crayons or markers.
Draw it on the screen
This lesson draws only a puppy's face. A dog's face is different from a cat's: the ears hang down, and a wide muzzle holds a big nose and a happy mouth. Two light guide lines show where the eyes go. Want to draw the whole dog, with a body, four legs and a tail? Try the Standing Dog lesson next.

Your drawing does not have to look like this one. Every artist draws a little differently.
Tips for this drawing
Helpful hints
- Keep the ears outside the head circle. They hang down beside it like long socks.
- Press lightly for the guide lines so they are easy to erase.
- Try other moods: raise little eyebrows over the eyes for a surprised puppy, or skip the tongue for a calm one.
Common mistakes
- The muzzle is small and the face looks like a cat. Make the muzzle wide, about as wide as the space between the outside edges of the eyes.
- The ears point up. Start each ear at the top of the head and let it hang down past the cheeks.
Make it simpler
Skip the guides and the patch: draw the head, two floppy ears, two dot eyes, the muzzle and a nose.
Face guide lines
A light line down the middle and one across show where the face goes. The eyes sit on the line across, the same distance from the middle line, and the nose sits on the middle line.
