The passage and its 4 questions
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions in full sentences.
- A honeybee has a busy day. She flies from flower to flower, sipping a sweet juice called nectar. She stores it in a special honey stomach and carries it back to the hive.
- Inside the hive, she passes the nectar to other bees. They work it with their mouths and add special juices from their bodies. Then they put it into the little six-sided rooms of the honeycomb.
- The nectar is still too watery to be honey. So the bees fan it with their wings until much of the water dries up. At last, the thick, golden honey is ready. The bees seal each room with a cap of wax.
- The honey is food for the bees in winter, when there are no flowers to visit. One bee makes only a tiny bit of honey in her whole life, so it takes thousands of bees to fill a jar.
- 1. What is the sweet juice that bees collect from flowers?
- 2. Why do bees need to save honey for the winter?
- 3. What does the word 'seal' mean in paragraph 3?
- 4. How is this like something in your own life?
