Area, Arrays and Perimeter
Area is the number of unit squares that cover a shape; perimeter is the distance around it. Learners tile rectangles and connect tiling to multiplying side lengths, split rectangles and L-shapes into parts, find perimeters (including a missing side), and discover that shapes with the same perimeter can have different areas.

What learners will discover
- Find the area of a rectangle by counting unit squares and by multiplying its side lengths, giving the answer in square units.
- Use the distributive property with area and find the area of rectilinear figures by splitting them into rectangles.
- Find the perimeter of a polygon, including when one side length is unknown.
- Tell area from perimeter in real situations and show that rectangles with the same perimeter can have different areas.
