Add and Subtract Unlike Fractions
Learners see why fractions must be cut into same-size pieces before they can be added or subtracted, then use equivalent fractions to add and subtract unlike fractions and mixed numbers, including regrouping. Benchmark estimates (0, 1/2 and 1) are used to catch unreasonable answers in recipes, hikes and building projects.

What learners will discover
- Explain why adding or subtracting fractions needs same-size parts (a common denominator), using fraction bars and number lines.
- Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators by replacing them with equivalent fractions.
- Add and subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators, regrouping a whole when needed.
- Estimate with benchmark fractions to judge reasonableness and solve word problems with unlike fractions.
