Mathematics · Grade 5
Numerical Expressions and Patterns
Learners evaluate expressions with parentheses, brackets and braces, translate words into expressions and reason about expressions without calculating them. They then build two numerical patterns from two rules, line up corresponding terms as ordered pairs and explain the relationship between them, before modelling costs and savings with expressions.

What learners will discover
- Evaluate numerical expressions that use parentheses, brackets and braces, following the order of operations.
- Write numerical expressions from words and interpret expressions without evaluating them.
- Generate two numerical patterns from two rules, form ordered pairs of corresponding terms and explain the relationship between them.
- Model a multi-step real situation with an expression or a pair of patterns and evaluate it.
