Expressions and Equivalent Forms

Learners write and evaluate numerical expressions with whole-number exponents, then move to expressions with variables: writing them from words, naming their parts and evaluating formulas such as the area of a square and the volume of a cube. The course ends with equivalent expressions made with the distributive property and like terms, tested by substitution.

  • 4 lessons
  • About 90 minutes
  • Expressions and equivalent forms check: 10 questions
  • Ways to answer: fill in the blanks, choose an answer, type a fraction, match pairs, type a number and put in order

What learners will discover

  • Write and evaluate numerical expressions with whole-number exponents, following the order of operations.
  • Write expressions with variables from words and describe their parts using sum, difference, product, quotient, factor, term, coefficient and constant.
  • Evaluate expressions and formulas, including A = s² and V = s³, for given values of their variables.
  • Generate equivalent expressions with the distributive property and by combining like terms, and test whether two expressions are equivalent by substitution.
