Data Summaries and Mathematical Modeling

Learners describe data sets, find the mean as a fair share and balance point, and measure spread with the mean absolute deviation. They compare the mean and MAD with the median and IQR and choose the measures that fit the shape of the data. The course closes with a modeling lesson that combines ratios, rates, percents, fractions and data summaries from the whole year.

  • About 90 minutes
  • Data summaries and modeling check: 10 questions
  • Ways to answer: choose an answer, type a fraction, match pairs, type a number, put in order and sort into groups

What learners will discover

  • Describe a data set by its number of observations, the attribute measured, its units and how it was measured, and find and interpret the mean as a fair share and a balance point.
  • Find and interpret the mean absolute deviation (MAD) as the average distance of the values from the mean.
  • Find the median and interquartile range, and choose the measures of center and variation that best fit a distribution's shape and outliers.
  • Model real situations by combining ratios, rates, percents, fractions and data summaries from the year, stating assumptions and interpreting answers in context.
