How to Draw a Tractor

  • Growing (level 3 of 5)
  • 15 min
  • 10 steps
  • Ages 6–10 (a guide, not a rule)

Draw on paper: Paper, Pencil. Optional: Eraser, Green, yellow, gray and light blue crayons, colored pencils or markers.

Draw it on the screen

A tractor has one giant wheel at the back and a small one at the front. Round circles are hard to draw, so here is a trick: draw a light square first, then a circle inside it that touches the middle of each side. A ground line keeps both wheels level. The small front wheel is in front of the hood, so the hood line stops where it meets the wheel.

Rather color it? Print the tractor coloring page.

Step by step

  • New lines: purple, thick and glowing
  • Lines you already drew: gray
  • Guides: dashed blue, draw them lightly
  • Erase: dotted pink with an eraser
  1. Step 1 diagram, with the new lines highlighted
Step 1 of 10 Draw a light, straight ground line across the bottom of your paper. Both wheels will sit on it.
  2. Step 2 diagram, with the new lines highlighted
Step 2 of 10 Draw a big light square on the left and a small light square on the right. Both sit on the ground line.
  3. Step 3 diagram, with the new lines highlighted
Step 3 of 10 Draw a circle inside each square. Make it touch the middle of each side. These are the wheels.
  4. Step 4 diagram, with the new lines highlighted
Step 4 of 10 Draw an arch over the big wheel, a little bigger than the wheel. This is the fender. Close its left end with a short line.
  5. Step 5 diagram, with the new lines highlighted
Step 5 of 10 Draw a flat roof high above the big wheel. Then draw the two sides of the cab: the back side goes down to the fender.
  6. Step 6 diagram, with the new lines highlighted
Step 6 of 10 Draw the long hood in front of the cab: the top, a round corner and the front. Draw the bottom line, but stop at the small wheel and start again after it.
  7. Step 7 diagram, with the new lines highlighted
Step 7 of 10 Draw a big window in the cab and a tall exhaust pipe on top of the hood.
  8. Step 8 diagram, showing what to erase
Step 8 of 10 Erase the ground line and the two squares.
  9. Step 9 diagram, with the new lines highlighted
Step 9 of 10 Draw a smaller circle inside each wheel for the rim, and a tiny circle in the middle for the hub.
  10. Step 10 diagram, with the new lines highlighted
Step 10 of 10 Finish with details: short tread lines around both tires, a grill and a headlight on the front, a steering wheel and some grass.

Your drawing does not have to look like this one. Every artist draws a little differently.

Tips for this drawing

Helpful hints

  • To draw a round wheel, put a dot in the middle of each side of the square, then join the dots with a curve.
  • Keep the squares light. They help you, but they are not part of the tractor.
  • The cab window is a rectangle with round corners. Leave a frame of tractor around it.

Common mistakes

  • The two wheels float at different heights. Draw the ground line first and make both squares, and both wheels, touch it.
  • The hood line is drawn across the front wheel. The wheel is in front. Stop the line at the wheel and start it again on the other side.
  • Both wheels are the same size, so it looks like a car. Make the back square almost twice as tall as the front square.

Make it simpler

Skip the squares and the fender: draw a big and a small circle on a line, a box for the cab and a long box for the hood.

Proportion

The back wheel is almost twice as tall as the front wheel. Drawing the two squares first lets you check the sizes before you draw the circles.

Overlap

The front wheel is in front of the hood and the fender wraps over the big wheel. A line that goes behind a wheel stops at its edge.
