Restore Discovery Island, an Adventure Mission story cover

Mission 30

Restore Discovery Island

Discovery Island is a ferry ride from town: a jetty, a garden, a marsh full of birds and a lookout on the hill. Winter knocked it about, and the first school visit is on Saturday. Every job is different, and every one needs something you know how to do: sort, count, share, measure, find the way, read a table, make a plan and give your reasons.

  • 5 parts

Who is playing?

Each age gets its own version of the story. Any of them is fine to play.

Grades 6 to 8

Open by Saturday

The job: Weigh the evidence, compare the ways of doing each job, and replan when the weather turns, so the island opens on Saturday with a plan you can defend.

  1. Who Ate the Lettuces? With a PlayOwl plan
  2. The Supply Run With a PlayOwl plan
  3. Hours Against Coins With a PlayOwl plan
  4. The Gale Warning With a PlayOwl plan
  5. Friday, Noon to Three With a PlayOwl plan
For grown-ups: what this mission practices

The finale of the missions: each stage is a different job that calls on a different skill, from sorting, sequencing and fair sharing to measuring in standard units, reading tables, planning routes and laying paths on a grid. Older children size up jobs, fit them inside coins and helper-hours, weigh evidence, compare alternatives, replan when conditions change and justify the plan.

Ages
Five versions, from Preschool to Grade 8. They are different designs, not the same task with other numbers.
How it is checked
Every answer is checked by rules the child can see at work on the screen. Any answer that meets them is right.
Help
Olly can read any line aloud, give a hint that points at where to look, or show one way. A report says where help was used.
Time
Nothing is timed. A part takes a few minutes and progress is saved after each one for a signed-in child.
