Hazards, Resilience and Environmental Change

Why do some earthquakes, cyclones and droughts become disasters while others do not? Learners explain where geophysical and weather hazards occur and why, examine how a warming climate is changing some of them, and use the idea that risk depends on the hazard, exposure and vulnerability. Comparing the Indian state of Odisha's cyclones of 1999 and 2013 shows how warnings and preparation save lives, and learners finish by designing a resilience plan for a coastal town.

What learners will discover

  • Explain the causes and global distribution of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis.
  • Explain how tropical cyclones, floods and droughts form, where they occur, and how climate change is affecting some hazards.
  • Use hazard, exposure and vulnerability to explain why similar hazards have very different impacts.
  • Evaluate strategies that reduce disaster risk and build resilience.
