Grade 4 · History
Two Railroads Meet
A timeline drawn as a railroad track running left to right, with four markers. Labels: "1862: Railroad law signed", "1863: Work begins", "April 28, 1869: Ten miles of track in one day" and "May 10, 1869: Rails meet at Promontory Summit". A small steam engine faces in from each end of the track.
In the 1860s, crossing the United States was slow and hard. A trip west by covered wagon could take four to six months. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed a law to build a railroad across the West.
