Grade 5 · History
Lewis and Clark Cross the Mountains
A simple map of mountain country, with no state lines. A dashed line labeled "Lolo Trail" winds west over a band of peaks labeled "Bitterroot Mountains" and ends at an open green meadow labeled "Weippe Prairie" near the left edge. A compass rose shows north.
In September 1805, the explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark faced the hardest part of their journey to the Pacific Ocean. Their group, called the Corps of Discovery, had to cross the Bitterroot Mountains, a rugged range in what is now Idaho and Montana. They could not have done it alone.
