Grade 8 · History
Building the Brooklyn Bridge
When the Brooklyn Bridge opened in 1883, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Its main span stretched nearly 1,600 feet between two stone towers, high above New York's East River, and it hung from cables made of steel wire, a new choice for bridges at the time. Yet the project almost ended before construction even began. It was finished only because three members of one family refused to give up.
