Grade 9 · History
The Voyage of the Endurance
In August 1914, the ship Endurance left England carrying the explorer Ernest Shackleton and his crew toward Antarctica. Shackleton's plan was bold even by the standards of polar explorers: he meant to land a party on the frozen continent and cross it on foot, from one coast to the other, by way of the South Pole. He had already come within about a hundred miles of the Pole on an earlier expedition, in 1909, before turning back to save his men's lives. In December, after a last stop at the whaling stations on the island of South Georgia, the ship pushed south into the Weddell Sea.
