Should AI Write Your Essay?
Ask a high school senior to write a thousand words on the causes of a historical event, and a few years ago she faced a blank page and a long evening. Today she can type the assignment into an artificial intelligence program and receive a polished essay in less time than it takes to find a pencil. The temptation is understandable, and the question it raises is a fair one: if a machine can produce the essay, why should a student struggle to produce it herself? The answer depends on what an essay is for.
