Grade 2 · Story
The New Kid on Maple Street
A sunny street of small houses in summer. A girl of seven with brown skin and a long black braid, in a yellow T-shirt and green shorts, sits quietly on her front steps by a stack of boxes. Over a low wooden fence, a boy with fair skin and sandy hair in a blue cap and a girl with tan skin and black pigtails play with a red ball.
Priya's family moved to Maple Street in June, and she did not know anyone yet. One afternoon, she sat on her front steps and watched two kids play kickball next door. She wanted to join them, but she was too shy to ask.
Just then, the ball sailed over the fence and rolled up to her feet. A boy in a blue cap ran to the fence and called, "Can you kick it back?" Priya kicked it so hard that it flew right over his head. "Wow! Do you want to be on our team?" he asked. Priya grinned, and she ran next door to play.
