Grade 3 · Story
A Day Without Power
A dim living room at night, lit by a lantern and a flashlight on the rug. Rain streaks the window. A mother with brown skin and hair in a bun holds up her hands to make a rabbit shadow on the wall. A girl of about nine, brown skin, braids, purple sweater, and a little boy in striped pajamas sit on the rug and laugh.
Thunder had been rumbling all afternoon. Then, with a loud crack, the lights went out, and Hannah's show disappeared from the screen. "How long will the power be out?" Hannah groaned.
