Marie Tharp Maps the Ocean Floor
For most of human history, the bottom of the ocean was a mystery. Sailors knew the seas were deep, but no one could see what lay hidden under miles of dark water. In the 1950s, a scientist named Marie Tharp began to change that. She drew some of the first detailed maps of the ocean floor.
