The Audition
Priya and I had been best friends since second grade, so when Ms. Delgado posted the sign-up sheet for the spring play, we wrote our names one under the other, the way we always did. Then we read the rest of the sheet more carefully, and we both went quiet. There were plenty of small parts, but there was only one lead: Captain Wren, a fearless sea captain who steers her battered ship through a hurricane to rescue her crew. We both wanted it desperately.
