Grade 8 · Story
A Retrieved Reformation
When Jimmy Valentine walked out of prison with a pardon, a stiff new suit and a train ticket, the warden urged him to give up cracking safes and live an honest life. Jimmy looked innocently puzzled and insisted that he had never touched a safe. Within a week, a bank safe in Indiana had been emptied without leaving a single clue, and two more robberies followed in quick succession. Ben Price, the detective who had arrested Jimmy once before, studied the neat drill holes and the knobs pulled cleanly out, and he knew at once whose work it was.
