Grade 3 · History
The First Ferris Wheel
A sunny summer day long ago. A giant steel wheel with boxy cars hanging from its rim rises high above white buildings with columns. A wide blue lake stretches behind. In front, a few visitors in old-fashioned clothes walk on a path: a woman in a long dress and a wide hat, a man in a straw hat, and a girl in a pinafore.
In 1889, Paris, France, held a giant world's fair. Its star was the Eiffel Tower, the tallest tower in the world at the time. Four years later, it was Chicago's turn to hold a world's fair.
