Double, then double again

The 4 times table

Every fact in the 4s is a double of a double, so a child who knows the 2s can work out any 4s fact. Every answer is even.

The 4 times table

  1. 4 × 14
  2. 4 × 28
  3. 4 × 312
  4. 4 × 416
  5. 4 × 520
  6. 4 × 624
  7. 4 × 728
  8. 4 × 832
  9. 4 × 936
  10. 4 × 1040
  11. 4 × 1144
  12. 4 × 1248

Learning the 4s

The tricky ones

4 × 7 = 28 and 4 × 8 = 32 are hardest: the second double crosses a ten (14 → 28, 16 → 32). Say both steps out loud.

Use what you know

Double the number twice: 4 × 6 → 12 → 24. Or use the turn-around: 4 × 9 is 9 × 4, ten 4s take away one 4: 40 − 4 = 36.

Where you meet the 4s

  • Legs on chairs or dogs: 6 dogs have 24 legs.
  • Wheels on cars: 7 cars have 28 wheels.
  • A square's sides: 9 squares have 36 sides.

Patterns and tricks

  • Double, then double again: 4 × 6 → 12 → 24.
  • Every answer is even.

Divide by 4

Every multiplication fact has a division fact in its family: if 4 × 4 = 16, then 16 ÷ 4 = 4.

  1. 4 ÷ 41
  2. 8 ÷ 42
  3. 12 ÷ 43
  4. 16 ÷ 44
  5. 20 ÷ 45
  6. 24 ÷ 46

  9. 36 ÷ 49
  10. 40 ÷ 410
