Counting by fives

The 5 times table

The 5s match the clock and money, and every answer ends in 0 or 5. Children who can count by fives already know most of this table.

The 5 times table

  6. 5 × 630
  7. 5 × 735
  8. 5 × 840
  9. 5 × 945
  10. 5 × 1050

  12. 5 × 1260

Learning the 5s

The tricky ones

5 × 7 = 35 and 5 × 9 = 45 come up wrong when counting loses its place. Using the clock face (7 is at 35 minutes) is a strong anchor.

Use what you know

Five is half of ten: work out 10 × and halve it. 5 × 8 is half of 80, which is 40. For odd numbers, half of 70 is 35.

Where you meet the 5s

  • Minutes on a clock: the long hand on 9 means 45 minutes.
  • Nickels: 6 nickels are 30 cents.
  • Fingers: 4 hands have 20 fingers.

Patterns and tricks

  • Every answer ends in 5 or 0.
  • 5 × an even number ends in 0. 5 × an odd number ends in 5.
  • 5 × is half of 10 ×: 5 × 8 is half of 80.

Divide by 5

Every multiplication fact has a division fact in its family: if 5 × 4 = 20, then 20 ÷ 5 = 4.

  1. 5 ÷ 51
  2. 10 ÷ 52
  3. 15 ÷ 53
  4. 20 ÷ 54
