What children learn in reading

Reading starts long before a child reads alone. Preschoolers listen to stories and play with rhymes; kindergarten and first grade connect letters to sounds, blend words and learn sight words; second grade builds fluency with vowel teams and longer words. From third grade on, children read to learn: chapter books and nonfiction, main ideas, vocabulary from prefixes and roots, and writing that uses evidence. Middle school adds theme, argument and close reading of an author's choices.
